The human body contains multiple trigger points.
Trigger points causes hyper-irritable spots in the muscles and makes the muscle tissue shorten where the bands of muscle are taut along the skeletal muscle tissues.
They present as nodules along the fascial bands. They can be felt as tightness, tension and local tenderness, and often there is referred or reflective pain felt in corresponding parts of the body.
These points can produce acute or chronic pain, and can tighten the surrounding corresponding muscles immensely.
They can be caused by injuries or trauma to the area, over-stretching muscles, repetitive stress or strain injury and or psychological or emotional stress.
Stress from working with a computer keyboard is a causation factor a lot of the time.
Trigger Point Therapy is designed to release the knots of the muscle-skeletal bands. This is achieved by transverse snapping palpation or holding the trigger points.
Characteristics felt by the releasing of trigger points are:- moving involuntarily, pulling away from the pain site, jerking another unrelated part of the body in response to the pain. The applied pressure of the fingers is minor compared to the response experienced by the client. They can be released with compression or muscle contraction and stretching of the muscular tissue. When the trigger points are released, intense pain can be felt at the site, then reduction of the pain is achieved.
The pain experienced can be likened to burning, stinging, and spasms. It does not necessarily involve nerve roots, myotomes or dermatomes, however the nerve receptors are alerted. The pain can show up as headaches, torticollis (wry neck) limited head rotation and shooting pain various body areas.
